Approved medical uses
Tramadol is typically prescribed when other, less potent pain medications have not been effective. The form and dosage depend on the type of pain being treated.
For moderate to severe pain
- Acute pain: Conditions such as pain from injuries, dental procedures, or following surgery are treated with immediate-release tramadol tablets, capsules, or liquid.
- Chronic pain: Extended-release versions, like the 100 mg sustained-release tablets, are for persistent pain that requires round-the-clock, long-term management. This includes certain cases of:
- Cancer pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Neuropathic pain
- Chronic back pain
Off-label uses
In some cases, tramadol may be prescribed for conditions not officially approved by regulatory bodies, but evidence for these uses is less robust.
- Premature ejaculation: Some studies have shown it to be effective, but this use is not widely recommended due to the potential for abuse and side effects.
- Restless legs syndrome: It may be prescribed for cases that do not respond to other treatments.
