FDA-approved uses
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Adderall for treating two conditions:
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Adderall is commonly prescribed to increase attention and focus, and to decrease restlessness and impulsive behavior in adults and children with ADHD. The 30 mg strength is the maximum recommended dose for children ages 6 to 12 taking the extended-release (XR) version.
- Narcolepsy: This medication can increase daytime wakefulness and alertness in individuals with narcolepsy, a chronic sleep disorder. The immediate-release (IR) form of Adderall is approved for this use, and daily dosages can range from 5 to 60 mg, divided throughout the day.
