Important warnings
Due to the presence of codeine, an opioid, this medication has specific risks that require careful management by a doctor.
- Risk of addiction: Long-term use can lead to drug dependence and addiction. Patients can experience withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, restlessness, and sweating if they stop taking it suddenly.
- Maximum 3-day use: If you were not given specific instructions from a doctor, you should not take co-codamol for more than three consecutive days.
- Paracetamol overdose: Taking more than the recommended dose can be very dangerous due to the risk of serious liver damage from the paracetamol content. Do not take any other products containing paracetamol while on co-codamol.
- Breathing problems: The codeine in this medication can cause severe breathing problems, especially in children and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
- Drug interactions: Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including herbal remedies, as co-codamol can interact with certain medications and increase the risk of side effects.
- Metabolizing codeine: Some people metabolize codeine into morphine very rapidly, leading to a higher risk of opioid toxicity. This can cause severe side effects such as shallow breathing, confusion, and small pupils.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Co-codamol is not recommended during pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor, and it is contraindicated while breastfeeding, as codeine passes into breast milk and can affect the baby.
- Driving: This medication can cause dizziness and drowsiness, and you should not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Alcohol: You should not drink alcohol while taking co-codamol, as it can increase the risk of drowsiness and other serious side effects
