Common uses
- Pain relief: Codeine is effective for managing mild to moderate pain after surgery, injuries, or in cases of ongoing pain where alternatives like paracetamol or ibuprofen are not sufficient. When taken for pain, the typical adult dosage is 15 to 60 mg every four to six hours as needed.
- Cough suppression: In adults, codeine is sometimes used to suppress an exhausting, non-productive cough. This use is generally not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 due to safety risks.
- Anti-diarrheal: Codeine can be used for the short-term relief of prolonged diarrhea, as it slows the movement of muscles in the intestines.
