Lorazepam Axapharm 2.5mg is a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of anxiety disorders and anxiety-related insomnia. The “Axapharm” is a brand name, but the active ingredient, lorazepam, is a benzodiazepine that acts as a central nervous system depressant.
Common uses
- Anxiety: Lorazepam helps relieve the symptoms of anxiety, such as restlessness, tension, and excessive worry. It is generally recommended for short-term use, typically for 2–4 weeks, to prevent dependence.
- Anxiety-related insomnia: For sleep problems caused by anxiety or situational stress, lorazepam may be prescribed to be taken before bedtime. The 2.5mg dose is on the higher end of the typical range for insomnia, which is usually 1mg to 2mg.
- Pre-operative sedation: In a hospital setting, lorazepam can be given to help patients relax and feel less anxious before an operation or other medical or dental procedure. It can also produce anterograde amnesia, meaning the patient may not remember the events of the procedure.
- Intensive care unit (ICU) sedation: As an intravenous (IV) injection, lorazepam is used for the sedation of intubated and mechanically ventilated patients.
- Status epilepticus: The medication can be administered by injection to treat status epilepticus, a severe and life-threatening condition in which seizures don’t stop.
- Other uses: Lorazepam is sometimes used off-label (for an unapproved purpose) to manage nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or to help control agitation associated with alcohol withdraw
