Uses

• Insomnia: It is prescribed for adults with severe sleeping problems, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, and waking up early. It helps by calming the brain and nervous system.
• Seizures and epilepsy: Nitrazepam is also used as an anticonvulsant to manage certain seizure disorders. In infants and children, it is sometimes used to treat specific types of seizures, such as infantile spasms and myoclonic seizures. 

• Short-term use: Treatment for insomnia with nitrazepam should be as short as possible, generally not exceeding 7 to 10 days in adults. Long-term use carries a high risk of dependence and tolerance.
• High-risk medication: Due to its potential for abuse and dependence, nitrazepam is not recommended for mild anxiety or mild insomnia. Patients with a history of substance abuse are at a higher risk.
• Side effects: Common side effects include dizziness, sedation, drowsiness, unsteadiness, and impaired coordination. It is crucial not to operate machinery or drive after taking this medication.
• Withdrawal symptoms: Suddenly stopping nitrazepam can lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, restlessness, and increased sleeping problems. The dosage should always be gradually tapered under a doctor’s supervision.
• Elderly patients: Older adults are more sensitive to the effects of nitrazepam and are at a higher risk of side effects like confusion and an increased risk of falls. A lower dose is typically recommended.
