For Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
The medication works by increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, helping to improve focus and control impulses. Ritalin is used in children aged six and older and adults as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that can also include counseling. It helps to address symptoms such as:
- Difficulty concentrating

For narcolepsy
As a stimulant, Ritalin helps to manage narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. It works by promoting wakefulness and alertness.
Off-label uses
In some cases, doctors may prescribe methylphenidate off-label for other conditions. This means the medication is used for a purpose not officially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Off-label uses have been explored for:
